How to work out CAGR
- Choose what to work out: the growth rate, the end value or the years.
- Enter the starting value and the other two numbers.
- Read the yearly rate and the year-by-year values.
What CAGR means
The compound annual growth rate is the steady yearly rate that turns the starting value into the ending value: (end ÷ start) to the power of 1 ÷ years, minus 1. It smooths out the ups and downs, which makes investments, sales or users over different periods easy to compare.
An investment that went from 1,00,000 to 2,50,000 in 5 years grew 150% in total, but its CAGR is 20.1% a year, not 30%, because each year's growth builds on the last.
Good to know
- Add months for periods that aren't whole years: 3 years and 6 months is 3.5 years.
- The simple average (total growth ÷ years) is shown too, so you can see how different it is.
- Money added or taken out along the way isn't part of CAGR. For regular deposits use the Compound Interest or SIP Calculator.
Preguntas frecuentes
What is a good CAGR?
It depends on what is growing and the risk taken. Compare it with what you could have earned elsewhere over the same years, such as a fixed deposit or an index fund, rather than with a fixed number.
Is anything sent anywhere?
No. The calculation happens in your browser, and the numbers you enter never leave your device.
