How to view a photo's metadata

  1. Choose or drop a photo.
  2. Read the privacy check at the top: it lists anything that could identify you, such as GPS location or serial numbers.
  3. Scroll through the details, grouped into location, camera, date, capture settings and more.
  4. If you want to remove it, open the Image Metadata Remover.

What the viewer can show

Only metadata actually stored in your file is shown. Many images, such as screenshots or photos shared through messaging apps, contain little or no metadata.

  • EXIF: camera make and model, lens, date taken, exposure settings, GPS position, software, author and copyright.
  • XMP: editing software, titles, keywords, ratings, locations and edit history.
  • IPTC: captions, keywords, creator, copyright and location names used by photographers and news agencies.
  • PNG text: software, author, comments and AI generation prompts.
  • Color profile, comments and data hidden after the image (such as Motion Photo videos).

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo is read by your browser on your device. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

Preguntas frecuentes

How can I see where a photo was taken?

If the photo contains GPS data, the viewer shows its position (latitude and longitude) in the Location section. Photos from phones often include this unless location access for the camera was turned off.

Why doesn't my photo show any metadata?

Many apps and websites remove metadata when images are shared or saved, and screenshots usually don't have camera data. The viewer only shows what is really in the file.

Which formats are supported?

JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, HEIC, HEIF and AVIF. For HEIC files, the metadata can be read even in browsers that can't display the image itself.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Everything is read locally in your browser.
