How to upscale an image

  1. Choose one or more images.
  2. Pick AI or Smooth, and how many times larger the result should be.
  3. Press Upscale, then download the result (several files come as a ZIP).

AI or Smooth?

  • AI: Real-ESRGAN (the "general x4 v3" model), a well-known open-source upscaler. It draws in plausible detail, which makes edges, hair, text and textures look crisper than a plain resize. It needs WebGPU (current Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox on most computers).
  • Smooth: a high-quality Lanczos resize with optional sharpening. It invents nothing, so it is faithful to the original but soft when enlarged a lot. It is instant and works in every browser.

What AI upscaling can and can't do

  • It adds detail that looks right; it does not recover what the camera never captured. Small faces and text can come out altered, so don't rely on it for evidence or identification.
  • It also cleans up JPEG blockiness and light noise, which is usually what you want for old or heavily compressed pictures.
  • Large photos take a while: it runs on your graphics card, which needs a few seconds per megapixel on a decent one and noticeably longer on older built-in graphics. A progress count and time estimate are shown, and you can stop at any time.
  • No server-imposed file size limits. Browsers can draw pictures up to about 268 megapixels (32,767 pixels on a side; Safari and phones less), and a very large result needs a lot of free memory.

Pictures with transparency

PNG and WebP pictures with see-through areas keep them: the AI enlarges the colors and the transparency is enlarged smoothly, with the colors under invisible pixels cleaned first so no dark halo appears at the edges.

Your pictures stay on your device

The AI model (about 3 MB) comes from this website the first time you choose the AI method, like the page itself. It runs in your browser, so your pictures never leave your device.

Preguntas frecuentes

Why does the AI method say it needs WebGPU?

The network does a lot of arithmetic per pixel, which a graphics card does far faster than a processor. WebGPU is how a web page uses it. If your browser doesn't offer it, use Smooth, or try a current Chrome or Edge.

Will the result be as sharp as a picture taken at a higher resolution?

No. AI makes a picture look sharper and cleaner, but real extra detail can only come from a better original.

Which format should I save in?

Keep "Same as original" for photos, PNG for graphics with transparency or sharp edges. Large PNG files can be big: a 4× upscale has 16 times as many pixels.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The upscaler runs in your browser on your graphics card. The AI model is loaded from this website like the page itself; your pictures are never sent anywhere.
