How to open a file you can't open

  1. Choose a file, or drag it onto this page. You can also drop several files that belong together, such as a 3D model and its .bin file.
  2. The viewer checks what the file really is from its content (not just its name) and opens it with the best method your browser has.
  3. Read, zoom, turn pages or play it. Files inside archives and e-mail attachments can be opened in turn, and "Back" returns to the file they came from.

Safe by design

  • Nothing is uploaded: the page is not able to send your file anywhere, and the file is read only in your browser.
  • Nothing in a file is ever run: no macros in Office files, no scripts in HTML pages, SVG pictures, PDFs or e-mails, and no programs.
  • E-mails and web pages are shown without their scripts, styles and remote pictures, so the sender can't tell you opened them.
  • Archives are checked before anything is unpacked: paths that would escape the folder ("zip slip"), decompression bombs, programs inside and very deep nesting are pointed out.
  • The name of a file isn't trusted: a ".jpg" that is really a PNG, or a ".pdf" that is a ZIP, is shown as what it really is, with a warning.

What it can't do

  • Show documents exactly as Word, Excel or PowerPoint would: fonts, page layout, charts and SmartArt aren't reproduced.
  • Play AVI, WMV, FLV, MPG and other older formats: browsers have no decoder for them, and the one that would be needed (FFmpeg) is tens of megabytes, too heavy for this site.
  • Open files protected with DRM (bought e-books) or Office documents encrypted with a password.
  • Draw DWG, STEP, IGES and FBX models, PostScript pages or JPEG 2000 pictures: their details are shown instead.
  • Edit files: use the site's other tools for that (the viewer suggests them).

Mga madalas itanong

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read by your browser on your device. This website's security policy doesn't allow its pages to send data anywhere, so even the viewer itself couldn't upload it.

Why does my video play without picture, or not at all?

Each browser plays different codecs. The viewer asks your browser to play the actual file and says what is missing, for example H.265 (HEVC), which plays in Safari and in Edge on most Windows computers. The Video Converter can turn many videos into an MP4 that plays everywhere.

Is it safe to open a file I don't trust here?

The viewer never runs anything inside a file and shows web content without scripts, so opening is much safer than in the program that made it. It can't tell you whether a program inside an archive is harmful, so don't run programs from unknown sources.

How big can the file be?

No server-imposed file size limits. Your browser and device memory are the practical limit. Large videos and archives are read in pieces. Text files show their first 50 MB, and single files unpacked from an archive for viewing can be up to 512 MB.
