The short version: use the tools as much as you like, for anything legal. Just don't copy the website.

Use them for personal, school and business work, including client projects
Keep and use everything you make: your files are yours
Link to the site, share it and write about it

You can't

Copy, clone or mirror the website, or a large part of it
Rebrand it and pass it off as your own
Sell, rent or charge for a copy of it, or build a paid product or service on a copy

Using the tools

PrivTab is free to use, with no account. The tools work on your device and your files are never uploaded (see Privacy). We claim no rights in your files or in anything you make with the tools.

Please use the tools only on files you have the right to use, and within the law: for example, don't remove someone else's watermark or copyright notice from their work, and only unlock PDFs and archives you are allowed to open.

The website is ours

The website itself, meaning its design, the code we wrote, its texts and tool descriptions, its name and its look, is the work of PrivTab and is protected by copyright. All rights are reserved. Without our written permission you may not copy, re-host, mirror, rebrand, sell or rent the website or a substantial part of it, or use it or a copy of it in a commercial product or service.

Using the tools in your own work is not "commercial use of the website": compressing your shop's product photos or merging your client's PDFs is exactly what the site is for.

Thinking of copying it anyway?

You could try. But here's the thing: this site stands on the shoulders of dozens of open-source projects, each with its own authors, copyright notices and license conditions, and everything else is ours. Copy it to make money and you won't be dealing with one annoyed website owner. You'll be collecting lawyers from several countries like trading cards. The court hearings come in rounds, the legal fees have no free tier, and none of it runs locally in your browser. Save yourself the paperwork and build something of your own. Honestly, we'd love to see it.

Open-source parts

Many tools are built with open-source software, such as the libraries that read PDFs, encode audio and video, and recognize text. Each keeps its own license (MIT, Apache 2.0, BSD, MPL 2.0, LGPL, the SIL Open Font License and others), listed with full texts on the Open-source licenses page. Those licenses apply to those parts, and nothing in these terms takes away the rights they give you. They don't give any rights to the rest of the website.

Disclaimer: no warranty

The site and its tools are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind. We work hard to make them accurate and reliable, but they can have bugs, and results can differ between browsers and devices.
The tools never change your original files: they make new ones. Still, keep your originals and check each result before you delete anything, send it or publish it. This matters most for redacted PDFs, blurred pictures and removed metadata.
Calculators (loans and EMIs, GST and VAT, savings, age, BMI and the rest) give estimates for information only. They are not financial, tax, legal or medical advice. For decisions that matter, check the numbers with a qualified professional.
As far as the law allows, PrivTab is not liable for any loss or damage that comes from using the site or relying on its results, including lost data, lost income or the cost of redoing work.

Names and trademarks

Names of file formats, apps and companies (such as PDF, Word, Excel, iPhone, WhatsApp and Instagram) belong to their owners. They are used only to describe which files and services the tools work with. PrivTab is not affiliated with or endorsed by them.

Changes

We may update these terms from time to time; the date at the top shows the current version. If you keep using the site after a change, the new terms apply.
