How to make a scanned PDF searchable
- Choose the PDF.
- Tick the language of the text and choose the pages if you don't need all of them.
- Press Make it searchable and download the PDF. The text is also there to copy.
How it works
Each page is read by the Tesseract text recognition engine in your browser. The text is then laid over the page invisibly, exactly where the words are. The page itself is not changed, so it looks the same, but you can now search, select and copy it.
Good to know
- Languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Arabic, Hindi and Chinese (Simplified).
- Pages that already have text are skipped unless you turn that off.
- Sideways and upside-down scans are detected and read the right way.
- Expect a few seconds per page; High detail is slower but better for small print.
- Password-protected PDFs need to be unlocked first.

Veelgestelde vragen
Will the PDF look different?
No. Only invisible text is added. The file grows a little.
How accurate is it?
Clean scans of printed text are usually read very well. Blurry, skewed or handwritten pages give more mistakes; the page warns you about pages that were hard to read.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. It is processed in your browser and never sent anywhere.
