How to Split a PDF or Save Only Some of Its Pages

· 3 min read

A 60-page bank statement when you only need one month. A combined scan of ten receipts that each need submitting separately. A long report where a colleague needs just chapter 3. Splitting PDFs and extracting pages solves all of these, and it takes less than a minute.

Split or extract: what's the difference?

  • Splitting divides the whole document into several files: every page, or a set of ranges, or equal parts.
  • Extracting saves only the pages you pick, as one new PDF or one PDF per page, and ignores the rest.

If you want to keep everything but in pieces, split. If you want only a few pages, extract.

Split a PDF

  1. Open Split PDF and add your file.
  2. Choose how to split:
    • Single pages: every page becomes its own PDF.
    • Custom ranges: type ranges separated by commas, like 1-3, 5, 8-12. Each range becomes its own PDF.
    • Equal parts: for example, a 40-page file into four 10-page files.
  3. Download each part, or all of them together as a ZIP.

Extract specific pages

  1. Open Extract PDF Pages and add your file.
  2. Pick the pages you want.
  3. Save them as one new PDF, or as one PDF per page.

The original file isn't changed; you get a new file with just your selection.

Quality is never reduced

Both tools copy the pages exactly. Text stays as real, searchable text, images keep their quality, and nothing is re-compressed. The new files are simply smaller because they contain fewer pages.

Removing pages instead

If you want to keep most of a document and drop a few pages, Organize PDF may be quicker: you see all pages as thumbnails, delete the ones you don't want, and save. You can rotate or reorder pages at the same time.

Practical examples

  • Statements: extract the months you need for a loan or visa application instead of sending a full year.
  • Receipts: split a scan of many receipts into single pages, one per expense claim.
  • Courses and books: split a large PDF by chapter ranges so it's easier to read on a phone.
  • Upload limits: split a document into parts that each fit a portal's size limit.

Naming the results

When you split into many files, rename them clearly before sending, for example statement-2026-08.pdf rather than document-part-3.pdf. The recipient will thank you.

Common questions

Can I split a password-protected PDF? Unlock it first with Unlock PDF (you need to know the password), then split the unlocked copy. If the parts need protecting again, add a password to each with Protect PDF.

Does splitting make each part much smaller? Usually, yes: each part contains only its own pages. Fonts and images shared by many pages may be stored in each part, so the parts can add up to a little more than the original.

How do I split every page into its own file and name them? Choose single pages and download the ZIP. The files are numbered in page order; rename them afterwards in your file manager, or with a bulk rename tool if there are many.

Can I split on my phone? Yes. The tools work in mobile browsers, and the parts are saved to your phone's downloads.

Privacy

Split and extracted PDFs are usually personal or confidential: statements, payslips, contracts, medical records. These tools run entirely in your browser, so your document never leaves your device.

Summary

  • Split to break a whole document into parts.
  • Extract to save only the pages you need.
  • Organize to delete or reorder pages.
  • No quality loss in any of them.
