How to capitalize a title
- Paste your headlines, one per line.
- Pick a style: Chicago, AP, APA, MLA or sentence case.
- Copy the result.
The rules
- Chicago: articles (a, an, the), prepositions of any length and the conjunctions "and, but, or, nor, for" stay lowercase.
- AP: articles, coordinating conjunctions and prepositions of three letters or fewer stay lowercase; "With", "From" and "About" are capitalized.
- APA: only short words (three letters or fewer) that are articles, conjunctions or prepositions stay lowercase.
- MLA: like Chicago, articles, prepositions and coordinating conjunctions stay lowercase.
- In every style the first and last words are capitalized, and so is the first word after a colon. Words with capitals inside, like "iPhone" or "NASA", keep them.
Good to know
A few words are a preposition in one sentence and an adverb in another ("up" in "Look Up the Word" versus "Give up"). The rules here treat them as prepositions, which is right most of the time. Check names and special terms by eye.
Perguntas frequentes
Which style should I use?
Chicago for books and most blogs, AP for news, APA for academic papers in the social sciences, MLA for humanities essays. If you have no house style, Chicago is a safe choice.
