How to calculate VAT

  1. Choose whether your amount is before VAT (net) or includes VAT (gross).
  2. Enter the amount and the VAT rate.
  3. Read the VAT, the net and the gross amounts.

Removing VAT the right way

To take 20% VAT out of £120 you can't subtract 20% of £120 (£24): VAT was added to the net price, so divide instead. £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net, and the VAT is £20.

Does this work for sales tax and GST too?

Yes. Any tax charged as a percentage of the price works the same way. For India, the GST Calculator also shows CGST and SGST.
