How to work out chmod permissions

    1. Tick the permissions, type an octal number, or type the letters as ls -l shows them.
    2. Add special bits if you need them.
    3. Copy the chmod command.

    Reading the numbers

    Common choices

    • 644 for normal files (only the owner can change them).
    • 755 for folders and scripts.
    • 600 for private files such as SSH keys and .env files, and 700 for private folders.
    • Avoid 777: everyone on the server can change the file.

    الأسئلة الشائعة

What do s and t mean in rwsr-xr-x?

s is setuid or setgid: the program runs with the owner's (or group's) rights. t is the sticky bit: in a shared folder, people can delete only their own files. A capital S or T means the bit is set without execute permission.
