How to redact a PDF

  1. Choose your PDF.
  2. Drag boxes over what should go, or let the tool find words, emails, phone numbers or long numbers.
  3. Press Redact and save, check the result, and download it.

Removed for real

Drawing a black rectangle on a PDF usually only covers the text: it can still be selected, copied or searched. Here, every page with a box is redrawn as a picture with the boxes burned in, and the original page (its text, pictures, form fields and comments) is removed from the file. Pages without boxes are kept exactly as they were.

Finding what to hide

  • Words or names: type one or several, separated by commas. Spaces match line breaks too, so a name split over two lines is found.
  • Email addresses, phone numbers and long numbers (account, card and ID numbers) are found with one click.
  • Check every box afterwards: scanned pages have no text to search, so draw boxes on them by hand.

Hidden information

  • "Also remove hidden information" removes the document properties (author, title…), bookmarks, attachments and scripts, which could also contain what you are removing.
  • The tags used by screen readers repeat the text of the pages, so they are removed too.
  • Redacted pages can no longer be searched. To make them searchable again, use OCR PDF: it only finds the text you didn't cover.

Mga madalas itanong

Can the black boxes be removed afterwards?

No. The pages with boxes are replaced by pictures, and the original text and pictures of those pages are no longer in the file.

Why is the redacted PDF bigger?

Pages with boxes become pictures, which take more space than text. Choose "Smaller file" quality, or compress the PDF afterwards.

Can I use white boxes?

Yes. White boxes remove the information just the same, without showing that something was removed.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. It is processed in your browser and never sent anywhere.
