How to make a list of files in a folder
- Choose a folder, or drag it in. Add more folders or files if you like.
- Pick the format and the columns.
- Download or copy the list.
Formats
| Format | Good for |
|---|---|
| CSV | Sorting and filtering in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets. |
| JSON | Scripts and apps. |
| Markdown table | README files, wikis, GitHub and notes apps. |
| Plain list | One path per line, for a quick look or a script. |
| Folder tree | Showing how a folder is laid out, like the tree command, with folder totals. |
| SHA-256 checksums | A .sha256 checksum file to check later that no file has changed or been damaged. |
Good to know
- Only names, sizes and dates are read, so even big folders are listed in moments. SHA-256 is optional because it reads every file in full.
- Empty folders aren't listed: browsers only pass on the files inside a folder.
- Dates are the "date modified" your system reports. Creation dates and file owners aren't available to web pages.
- System files (.DS_Store, Thumbs.db, desktop.ini) are left out unless you untick the option.
- In the CSV, cells that start with =, +, - or @ get an apostrophe in front, so spreadsheet apps don't run them as formulas.
Your files stay on your device
Everything happens in your browser. Your files are never uploaded, and nothing in your folder is changed.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check the files against the checksum file later?
On Linux or macOS, run "sha256sum -c checksums.sha256" (or "shasum -a 256 -c checksums.sha256" on a Mac) in the folder the paths start from. Or open the File Hash Generator here, paste the list and drop the files in.
Why is the MIME type empty for some files?
The browser guesses the type from the file extension and leaves it empty when it doesn't know the extension. To find out what a file really is, use the File Type Detector.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The list is made on your device, and only names, sizes and dates are read unless you ask for SHA-256.
