Which calculation do I need?
| Question | Calculation |
|---|---|
| What is 15% of 80? | Percent of a number |
| 30 is what percent of 120? | What percent one number is of another |
| The price went from 80 to 100: by how much? | Percentage increase or decrease (+25%) |
| Add 20% VAT to 50 | Add or take off a percentage (use −20 to take 20% off) |
| 12 is 15% of what? | Find the whole from a part |
| How different are 120 and 150? | Percentage difference |
Percentage change or percentage difference?
Percentage change compares a new value with an old one, so the order matters: from 80 to 100 is +25%, but from 100 to 80 is −20%. Percentage difference compares two values with no "before" and "after", relative to their average, so the order doesn't matter.
Frequently asked questions
Why is taking 20% off and adding 20% back not the same price?
Because the second percentage is taken of a different number. 100 minus 20% is 80; 80 plus 20% is 96.
